The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) seems to be losing its battle against the rising pollution levels in Pune.
Its buses running on bio-diesel fuel have been facing a number of road blocks.
The buses at Katraj depot were the first to embrace bio-diesel fuel last year, but the project had undergone premature breakdown due tou00a0 the high cost of green fuel and irregularity in supplies from government authorized dealers. In July 2006, the pilot project was inaugurated with pomp and splendour, promising 1459 PMPL buses.
"The pilot project was immediately discontinued due to high costs and irregularity in supplies. PMPML is now concentrating on CNG buses," said PMPL PRO Dilip Pardeshi. Currently, around 50 CNG buses are plying on the Nigdi, Bhosari, Pimpri, and Katraj routes.
PMPL has ordered 35 more CNG buses which will soon join the PMPL fleet.
"There is only one CNG station in Mulshi, three more stations will soon start in Shivaji Nagar, Kothrud and Hadapsar," Pardeshi said.
The condition of the PMPL buses is in bad shape.
Over 250 buses have been in service for more than 15 years, out of which 37 buses have gone beyond their normal life standard of 18 years.
